RedBox Instant Should Scare Netflix

RedBox Instant could be the next big thing in streaming. They will allow non-subscribers to rent newly released movies straight into their living room and also have a Netlflix style streaming service. This could possibly be a threat to Netflix and Redbox has followed a similar path in coming to consumer's TV screens.

Netflix was originally a physical rental company that sent you DVD's by mail.  The Netflix name grew in popularity and when they launched instant streaming of content a lot of people subscribed.

Now Redbox is following a similar path. They too have started with physical rentals, but with an ingenious delivery system. Being available at mostly every major intersection is how Redbox turned into a physical DVD rental giant. Now they are releasing what I think will be Netflix's major competitor over the next few years.

The convenience of being able to rent new releases digitally with the Redbox name is a powerful combination. While this has been a norm for services like Xbox Video, iTunes, and many other services, Redbox has a better brand to succeed in this arena.

If the Redbox instant streaming library becomes as extensive as Netflix's, we could be looking at an interesting fight on the horizon. But that really only depends on how dedicated Redbox is on instant streaming. To me, I think that this is their true goal, to be the new Netflix, but with the ability to rent new releases from the comfort of your living room.

It is going to be interesting to see where this goes over the next year or two.

Here is the press release from Redbox detailing their new services.
