The numbers are in and “The Hobbit” broke December opening records! It opened at 4,045 locations and earned $84.6 million over the course of the weekend. This is not much of a surprise that it would break records, but I expected just a little more from it’s opening weekend.
Last weekend I estimated it would come within $10 million of $95 million, and I was just barely off. The previous December record holder was “I Am Legend”, which opened at $77.2 million.
“The Hobbit” will likely reach more than $300 million in its total domestic gross and I wouldn’t doubt that it will edge its way to around $1 billion worldwide.
I personally think that the next two movies will fare much better at the box office and with critics because the meat of the story will be in those two films.
Other than “The Hobbit”, the weekend was quite low. “The Rise of the Guardians” and “Lincoln” both came close to a tie with around $7 million and Skyfall held well with $6 million, considering it has been out over a month now.
Overall this weekend was great for December and I am predicting next December, with the second part of The Hobbit coming out, it will be even better.
