Disney announced on Tuesday that they have purchased Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise for $4.05 billion . They also announced plans to make a new trilogy of Star Wars films, 7, 8, and 9. This news may come as a surprise to those who have given up on the old rumor that Lucas was going to make another trilogy. Disney also announced their plans to move forward with Star Wars Episode VII to hopefully meet a 2015 release. George Lucas said:
“It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers”
So I take it George will not direct the new films, but he will probably have some hand in it.
What does this mean for the Star Wars franchise? Will a new director be able to take it and make it great? Yes. If these new films are directed by a Star Wars fanboy director (Example, Steven Spielberg or JJ Abrams) who is a fan first, director second, I will be very excited to see what they do.
